Table tennis at the 1996 Summer Olympics

The XXVI. 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta four competitions were held in table tennis. Venue was the Georgia World Congress Center.

Competition mode

The competition format has not changed in principle in relation to the 1988 Games:

  • In the men's and women's singles eight preliminary round groups will be played with four players in FFA mode. The first to reach the knockout stages, where it goes in the knockout system.
  • In Doubles events first eight preliminary groups are played with 4 pairings in mode FFA. The first are qualified for the quarter -finals and play here on a knockout system.
  • The bronze medal is played. So far, received third place and fourth place medal.

German participants

From Germany qualified automatically on the position in the ITTF World Ranking Jörg Rosskopf, Peter Franz, Nicole Struse and Jie Schoepp. In the European qualifying tournament for retail competition in Manchester won yet Olga Nemes a ticket while Steffen Fetzner failed here. In the qualifying tournament for doubles in Nantes, Rosskopf / Fetzner, sound / Struse and Nemes / Schoepp alleged; Wosik / Franz dropped out.

Men's Singles

Rosskopf won undefeated in the preliminary round Group E ahead of Hiroshi Shibutani (Japan), Lo Chuen Tsung ( Hong Kong) and Guillermo Munoz ( Mexico). In the second round he defeated Patrick Chila (France), in the quarterfinals Kim Taek -soo (South Korea). After he was defeated in the semifinals against Liu Guoliang. In the match for bronze he won against the Czechs Petr Korbel by 3-1.

Peter Franz came in Group C only to third place, falling short of the knockout stages. He won against Dukhail Alhabashi ( Kuwait ) and lost against Jean -Michel Saive (Belgium) and Vasile Florea (Romania).

Men Doubles

Rosskopf / Fetzner remained unbeaten in Group E, they let Karl Jindrak / Werner Schlager ( Austria ), Johnny Huang / Gideon Joe Ng (Canada) and Hugo Hoyama / Giuliano Flint Peixoto (Brazil ) behind. Then they came after the victory over Damien Eloi / Jean -Philippe Gatien (France) the semi-finals. Here they lost to the Chinese Lu Lin / Wang Tao. In the match for bronze they lost Chul-seung/Yoo Lee Nam -Kyu (South Korea).

Women's Singles

Nicole Struse sat in Group G with three victories over Taeko Todo (Japan), Tamara Boroš (Croatia) and Sonia Touati (Tunisia ) by. In the second round she defeated Tu Dai Yong ( Switzerland ) 3-1, after which they had no chance against the later gold medalist Deng Yaping (China) with 0:3.

Jie Schoepp did not qualify for the knockout stages itself. It arrived in Group I only in second place after beating Jelena Timina (Russia) and Funke Oshonaike (Nigeria ) and one defeat against Kim Hyon Hui (North Korea).

Women Doubles

The two German double occupied in the two opening acts space and thus eliminated from.

Nemes / Schoepp placed in Group B ahead of Andrea Holt / Lisa Lomas ( UK) and Berta Rodriguez Olate / Sofija Tepes Cancino (Chile) and behind Liu Wei / Yunping Qiao (China).

Sound / Struse won in Group G against Gerdie Keen / Mirjam Hooman (Netherlands) and Alessia Arisi / Laura Negri solos (Italy).
