Table tennis at the 2012 Summer Olympics

At the Olympic Games 2012 in London four competitions were held in table tennis from July 28 to August 8, 2012 at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre, each a single and a team event in men and women.

The competition program was identical compared to Beijing 2008. The ITTF had but prevailed that allowed for the first time start only two athletes per country in singles. The Chinese dominance should be restricted. Chinese athletes won 2008, all six possible individual medals. The team competitions were held this time in the knockout system.

Qualification

Qualification criteria

It was attended by 172 athletes, including 86 women and men, respectively. Two quota places for the individual competitions were reserved for the host NOK, another two quota places awarded the ITTF after completion of the qualification by invitation. In women and men started every 16 teams of three athletes. In individual each 72 athletes started, but a maximum of two of the country. The following qualification criteria were used in parallel for women and men.

In individual, the best 28 athletes of the world ranking, which was published after the 2011 World Championships qualified. 40 other starting places were awarded on continental tournaments ( eleven in Asia and Europe, six in Latin America and Africa and three in North America and Oceania). The last two starting places were awarded to the two best athletes one final international qualifying tournament. For the team competition, the best team from each continent skilled at the World Team Championship in 2012. Qualified is also a team of the host. The last nine places were awarded to countries where three athletes had achieved the qualification criteria for a single start. This applied to more than nine countries, the nine best-placed teams in the 2012 World Championships have been taken into account.

When oceanic qualifying competition Li Chunli and Phillip Xiao were initially able to qualify from New Zealand. After the launch sites, however, were returned to the ITTF, moved by the two qualifiers from Vanuatu. Matilda Ekholm of Sweden has indeed qualified for athletic participation, but was not approved by the National Olympic Committee of Sweden, because this saw no prospect that Ekholm could reach a place among the top eight. Your place was taken by the Ukrainian Tetyana Bilenko.
