Table tennis at the Summer Olympics

Table tennis is on the Olympic Games program since the 1988 Olympics.

1992 were awarded in each competition two bronze medals. Due to China's dominance of the sport in 2004, the rules of the tournament have been changed. Participants are divided into two groups since then so that the participants from the same country play in the same group. This can not go all three medals on the same land.

History

In 1931 within the ITTF for the first time the idea on to make table tennis an Olympic sport. However, this was not the support of the ITTF President Ivor Montagu, in 1946 explicitly spoke out against it. It was not until his successor Roy Evans have been working since 1967 for table tennis as an Olympic sport. 1977 ITTF changed its statutes, to make it compatible with the requirements of the International Olympic Committee IOC. Then, table tennis was officially recognized by the IOC. In 1981, the IOC decided to organize at the games in 1984 for the first time table tennis events.
