Tachypnea

Tachypnea (Greek ταχύπνοια, tachypnoia, "fast breathing " ) refers to increased or excessive respiratory rate ( i.e. breaths per minute). The normal respiratory rate of an adult who is not physically demanding, is 12 to 20 per minute. It increases in the elderly by a smaller tidal volume. The respiratory rate in the newborn is at rest between 30 and 50 per minute in premature infants between 70 and 80

Causes

Causes of tachypnea may be: Increased oxygen demand ( on exertion, fever ), disorders of acid -base balance, humiliated oxygen delivery, decreased oxygen uptake from the air (eg in lung diseases ) or disorders of respiratory control ( psychological arousal, hyperventilation ), heart disease, massive blood loss or anemia.
