Tagula White-eye

The white-throated White-eye ( Zosterops meeki ) is a little-known species from the family of white-eyes. He (formerly called white-throated ) endemic to the island Vanatinai in Louisiade archipelago.

Description

The White-throated white-eye reaches a length of 10.5 centimeters. The head is to the middle of the crown, under the eyes and the ears ceiling gloomy black. The top is olive green. Rump and upper tail-coverts are olive yellow. There are a large white eye ring and an indistinct yellow mouth angle strips available. Bottom and under wing-coverts are plain white with a light brownish approach. Abdomen and under tail-coverts are yellow. The beak is black slate. The feet are blue-gray and the iris is brown.

Habitat and behavior

The White-throated white-eye inhabited lowland rain forests and forest edges at altitudes up to 300 m on the island Vanatinai. Of his life little is known.

Status

The White-throated white-eye is difficult to discern due to his secret life. Are 30 years between the last detection in October 2004 and the penultimate observation. During a ten-day expedition on Mount Riu in 1992, no specimen could be observed. More than half of the forest on Vanatinai is degraded and cleared.
