Tahanea

Tahanea is a large uninhabited atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia. The next Faaite Atoll is 12 km east. Tahanea reached a stretch of 48 km in length with a maximum width of 15.2 km. The atoll is surrounded by reefs, which are a little wider in the south than in the north, located close to the atoll. There are three good navigable passages of the lagoon, the Motupuapua, Teavatapua and Otao be called.

Tahanea belongs administratively to the municipality of Anaa.

History

The island was discovered in 1774 by Domingo de Boenechea. He named the atoll San Julián

Similarly, it was hit by the Baltic German navigator Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen in 1820 as part of a research trip. He gave the atoll the name Chichagov.

Today, there are only the inhabitants of the neighboring islands, which sometimes visit the atoll to produce copra.

On the island of the South Seas runners ( Prosobonia cancellata ) is native.
