History

The name is derived from the name of Tailem, the Aborigines called this area by. The word means " river bend " (English: bend) and refers to the bend of the Murray River. ' Tailem Bend ' is thus a pleonasm.

In 1887, one year after the construction of the railway, the settlement was granted town rights.

Traffic

Tailem Bend is a railway and road junction between Adelaide and Melbourne.

Railways

At the junction of the side lines from the Murray Mallee are in the main line of large grain silos and warehouses. The two remaining side lines lead over Karoonda where previously several side lines ended, according to Pinnaroo and Loxton. These two railway lines - originally broad gauge - have been converted to standard gauge and directly connected to the main line, which was also switched from broad gauge to standard gauge, but remain secondary lines that can only be driven with very low speeds.

They are used only for the transport of grain in bulk, because the permissible speeds for time-critical goods are too low. The route to Pinnaroo leads ( but still in a broad gauge ) on to Ouyen, where it meets the distance from Mildura to Melbourne.

North of the city of South Eastern Freeway ends from the direction of Adelaide. In the south east of Tailem Bend branch from Princes Highway to the Mallee Highway in the direction of Sydney and the Dukes Highway to Melbourne, while the Princes Highway itself along the Coorong also leads towards Melbourne.

In Tailem Bend many truck drivers stop, coming from Adelaide or want to go there, because there are no service stations and tank trucks possibilities for more between the two cities.

Ferry
