Tailored Blank

A Tailored Blank (English, means: customized board ) is a sheet metal plate, which is typically composed of various material grades and thicknesses. This prefabricated semi -finished product is then formed, for example by drawing the desired component.

Tailored Blanks were developed by ThyssenKrupp Steel to manufacture sheet metal plates, which were wider than it was at that time possible with the existing rolling technology. Nowadays especially, the advantage is used, that boards of various material grades and thicknesses can be assembled. This allows you to adjust various points of the later component to local loads, which would otherwise require additional reinforcement parts. Advantages are the saving of weight ( lightweight ) and production costs. Tailored blanks are often used in the automotive industry for the manufacture of vehicle bodies.

Tailored blanks are completely independent of the rolling direction of the steel strip (coil ). Therefore, they are particularly useful in enhancing the material utilization efficiency and making it suitable for the reduction of material costs. The division of the component board is therefore useful even for identical thicknesses, grades and surfaces.

Tailored blank types

  • When tailored welded blank (TWB), the individual sheet metal plates are welded together. This is generally carried out as a butt joint by means of laser welding. Advantageously, the wide range of material combinations and geometries.
  • Tailored Strips (tailored coils) are continuous laser-welded metal strips. This created the opportunity to make tailored blanks can also be used for composite tools, or with customized bands to optimize rolling profiled components.
  • The Tailor Rolled Blank (TRB ) is cold-rolled again as a sheet-metal strip, the rolls generated by raising and lowering different sheet thicknesses. Advantage is the homogeneous transition between two thicknesses.
  • The patchwork as mending small plates are welded to a larger board by means of resistance spot welding or laser beam welding or adhesively bonded by means of structural adhesives.
  • Tailored tubes ( TT ) are tubular parts in car bodies which are joined together by laser welding and are placed in a mold, are then filled with liquid and then with several hundred mega Pascal pressure pressed to the shape of the die ( hydroforming ).
  • At Tailored Orbitals (TO) cut to length continuously produced pipes of different wall thicknesses, materials and coatings are the front side welded together. The tubes can the stresses at various locations adapted in this way and weight can be saved. Tailored Orbitals are semi-finished products for the automotive and other industrial applications.

Tailored blanks are typically made of sheet steel. In development are aluminum and hybrid blanks. Aluminum sheets are now processed by friction stir welding.
