Taiping ( "City of Eternal Peace", formerly Larut ) is one of the oldest cities in the Southeast Asian country Malaysia. The former capital of the region currently has about 220 589 inhabitants and is located in the state of Perak, in the northwest, the Malay Peninsula.

In the late fifties in the 18th century began the tin mining by immigrant Chinese workers. They dug the metal from several tin mines to the river Sungai Larut and made the city into a boomtown in the secret societies (triads ) in the Larut Wars of bloody fighting for power. Under British pressure on the parties to the Treaty of Pangkor in 1874 on the island of Pangkor was signed. After the peace, it was decided to rename the split into two hostile camps in town "City of Eternal Peace" ( Taiping ).

The population consists of Chinese, Malay and Indians.

  • The Perak Museum is the oldest museum of the Malay Peninsula. It houses over 8,000 ethnological, historical, archaeological and biological collections.
  • In the state Zoo Taiping nocturnal animals can be observed in the context of a night safari.
