The Taishō University (Japanese大 正 大学, Taishō daigaku ) is a private Buddhist university in Japan. The main campus is located in Nishi - Sugamo, Toshima, Tokyo.

History

The university was founded in the last years of the Taishō period (1926 ) through the merger of three Buddhist universities. The three were:

  • The Tendai Shuu- university (天台 宗 大学, Tendai shū daigaku, founded in 1885 ),
  • The Buzan College (豊 山 大学, Buzan daigaku, founded in 1887 and supported by Shingon shū Buzan -ha ), and
  • The Religious School (宗教 大学, Shūkyō daigaku founded in 1887 and supported by Jōdo Shuu ).

1943 Chizan - technical school was (智 山 専 门 学校, Chizan Semmon Gakko founded in 1914 and supported by Shingon shū Chizan -ha ) merged to Taishō University.

The university had initially only one Faculty: Arts and Humanities. In 1949 it was reorganized under the new Japanese educational system is divided into two faculties: Buddhist Studies and Humanities. In 1968 the main building was old ( built in 1908 as the main building of the religious college) removed; only the canopy is still get the Open Air Museum Meiji Mura. In 1993, the Faculty of Buddhist Studies was changed to Faculty of Human Sciences. 2010 Added two faculties: Buddhist Studies and expression studies.
