Taivalkoski

Taivalkoski [ tɑi̯vɑlkɔski ] is a municipality in Finland. It is located about 800 km northeast of the capital, Helsinki, in the Koillismaa called hills in the north- east of the country.

The municipality covers an area the size of the Saarland, has only 4316 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). In addition to the Kirchdorf Taivalkoski it includes the widely scattered settlements Inkee, Jokijärvi, Jokikylä, Jurmu, Koitila, Kosto, Kurtti, Loukusa, Metsäkylä, pisto, Tyrävaara and Vaarakylä.

History

The previously populated by the seed region was developed in the 16th century by Finnish settlers. Until the 18th century the village Jokikylä presented the settlement of gravity and the parish is, after the construction of a sawmill in today Kirchdorf Taivalkoski this was the administrative center. For centuries introduced agriculture and forestry and reindeer husbandry is the main industries, industrialization took place only in the second half of the 20th century. Today the church as the entire region has to contend with a weak structure and significant rural exodus. In recent years, tourism has developed into a major industry.

Taivalkoski is the birthplace of the writer Kalle Päätalo, the comedians Pekka Jalava, the ski jumper Tapio Räisänen and hockey player Joni Pitkänen.
