Takasaki, Gunma

Takasaki (Japanese高崎 市, -shi ) is a city in Gunma Prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan, which is connected by high-speed train Shinkansen with Tokyo, Niigata and Nagano.

Significant industries include metal products, electrical, silk and chemical fiber industry.

History

Takasaki was a post station (宿 场 町Shukuba -machi ) of Nakasendō during the Edo period.

The city was founded on April 1, 1900.

Culture

Every year on January 6th and 7th at the Aufgangsweg for "Dharma Temple at Shaolin Mountain" (少林 山 达磨 寺, Shorin -zan Daruma -ji ) is the largest market in the Kantō region Daruma instead. At over 150 stalls " eyeless Daruma " (目 無し ダルマ, Menashi Daruma ) are sold. The custom of the Risen Daruma draw in one eye and promise that you inscribes him in fulfillment of the desire a second, is particularly popular with politicians during the election campaign.

In Takasaki, there is the Museum of Modern Art by architect Arata Isozaki.
