Taksim (politics)

The Turkish word Taksim referred to the Cyprus conflict efforts to divide the island of Cyprus by the Turkish Cypriots. The term " Taksim " is a loanword from Arabic and means "share".

Was significantly influenced the Taksim idea ( slogan: " Taksim or Death" ) in the early 1950s by the future President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Rauf Denktash with substantial support from the UK. It stands in opposition to the conservative ambitions of Greek Cypriots of " Enosis ", the connection of the island with Greece.

When the military junta in Greece in 1974 tried to overthrow the government of the Republic of Cyprus to establish a puppet regime, Turkey took the opportunity to occupy the north of the island to international law.
