The Taksim Stadium (Turkish: Taksim Stadı ) at Taksim Square in Istanbul was the first football stadium in the district of Beyoğlu. It was a venue and also home of several football clubs of Istanbul, Beşiktaş as Istanbul, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

History

Originally built around 1780, a barracks of the artillery troops Topçu the Ottoman army at the site. After a major fire this 1806 Topçu barracks or Halil Pasha Topçu Barracks ( Taksim Turkish Halil Paşa Kışlası or Topçu Kışlası ) was built. This was in 1903 after a coup Turkish military badly damaged and subsequently lost its military importance. The Turkish government sold the entire area of the barracks in 1913 to the Turkish industrial and commercial enterprises Sanayi ve Ticaret Şirket -i -i Osmaniye Milliye.

Later the barracks courtyard was transformed into a soccer field and football clubs served as Beşiktaş Istanbul, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe Istanbul as a playing field. The redesigned barrack square was used at that time for theater performances. After World War II, stationed in Istanbul French troops and Senegalese soldiers billeted in the French colonial territories in the Topçu barracks and use the courtyard also as a playing field. The playing surface of the former barrack in 1921 officially renamed in Taksim Stadium. The first official game of the Turkish national football team took place on 26 October 1923 as a friendly against Romania and ended in a 2-2 draw. It was the first game of the Turkish Republic of newly established.
