Takutea

Takutea is a small, uninhabited island in the southern Cook Islands in the South Pacific.

It is located 21 km northwest of Atiu and administratively belongs to Atiu. Takutea measures about 1.2 square kilometers in area. The island was discovered on January 4, 1777 by James Cook. Landings at Takutea are considered dangerous and are only possible in the northwest. Today the island is a nature reserve where especially seabirds and coconut crab, a type of cancer, also called coconut cancer itself, are located.

Takutea considered administratively as part of Atiu, the nearest atoll at a distance of 21 kilometers. The island belongs to all the people of Atiu in equal parts and is not attributed to a particular village on Atiu.
