Talagante

Talagante is a city in the middle of Chile. It is situated in the Región Metropolitana de Santiago. It has 51 763 inhabitants (as of 2005).

Geography

The city lies about 30 km south of Santiago de Chile. It is the capital of the province Talagante.

History

The area around Talagante was already settled very early by the Diaguitas culture. They were followed later the Incas. This settled between Río Maipo and Mapocho. The Inca Tala Canta reported directly to the Incas of Cuzco. 1555 was the builder Bartolomé Blumenthal in search of timber in the forests south of Santiago de Chile. These were in the sphere of the Incas Tala Canta. Blumenthal and the Inca understood each other so well that he married the Kazikin Elvira de Talagante. Blumenthal changed his surname to Flores. The Flores family took care of after the settlement of Franciscans. 1585 there was a convent of the Franciscans in San Francisco de El Monte south of Talagante.
