Talcahuano

Talcahuano is a city in Chile. It has 161 692 inhabitants ( 2002 census ) and is located in the agglomeration Concepcion in the Región del Bío -Bío. The port city is dominated militarily and industrially.

History

1544 Captain Juan Bautista reached Pastene the first European to the area around Talcahuano. 1601 Governor Alonso de Ribera decided to build a port on the Tumbes Peninsula. The town was officially founded on November 5, 1764 by 'Antonio de Guill y Gonzaga '. In the Chilean independence, the Spanish troops in 1818 entrenched in Talcahuano. Mountain El Cerro la "U" Bernardo O'Higgins Chile declared as independent of Spain. 1872 Talcahuano received a railroad connection, which made the city one of the main Chilean ports. In 1875 Talcahuano had 2495 inhabitants.

On February 20, 1835 on May 22, 1960 Talcahuano was destroyed by large tsunamis. The earthquake in 1960, the town was destroyed 65 percent.

On 15 March 2004 was Hualpén (2002 census ) spun with 85 928 inhabitants of Talcahuano and declared an independent village. From the earthquake in February 2010, the city was hit particularly hard. Here, a powerful wave flooded the main square and left on the streets a large fishing boat. The docks were flooded, set industrial plants and oil installations under water.

Attractions

On the naval base is the Huascar, a major warship and a symbol of naval power in Chile. It was conquered in 1879 against Peru saltpeter.

The steam tug Ram Poderoso is a museum ship. Culinary specialties ( empanadas, seafood) there are in the fishing town of Tumbes. It is also known fish market Talcahuanos.

On the four- kilometers by 500 meters wide and accessible by boat in 40 minutes Isla Quiriquina eleven kilometers north of Talcahuano, the crew of the small German cruiser SMS Dresden in 1915 was interned after the naval battle in the Cumberland Bay on the Juan Fernandez Islands was captured. During the Chilean military dictatorship in 1973, the Army used the island as a concentration and torture camp. Mass graves of the concentration camp inmates on the island are suspected.

The museum and the park Pedro del Río Zañartu in Hualpén, the ranch is a national Chilean Monument.

Economy

Talcahuano is a major port of embarkation for Chilean wheat. In the harbor there is a petrochemical terminal and a fishing area. A railway connection serves as an important Vorsorgungsroute for the region IX ( Región de la Araucanía ). The Port of Talchuano as well as the neighboring ports of San Vicente and Lirquen were severely damaged in the earthquake of 27 February 2010 a tidal wave ( tsunami ).

The investments of the steel plant of Huachipato form an important pillar of the port.

Talcahuano is also an important naval base, the U- boat fleet. The city has its own airport, the Carriel Sur Airport ( nine kilometers east of the city ).
