Taldom

Taldom (Russian Талдом ) is a Russian city with 13,819 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in Moscow Oblast, about 110 kilometers north of Moscow, and within 10 km of the border with Tver Oblast. The nearest towns are Kimry (18 km north-west ) and Dubna (23 miles west).

History

The town was first mentioned as a village in 1677 and developed over the course of the 19th century as a center of the shoe industry. Beginning of the 20th century, up to 10 million pairs of shoes were produced annually here already. When, after the October Revolution the industry was zwangsverstaatlicht in Taldom, the place obtained city status in 1918. In addition, he was named in the same year Leninsk ( Ленинск ), in honor of the revolutionary leader Lenin, however, who had no personal connection to Taldom. In 1929 the city got back its original name.

Today still the shoe and textile industries in Taldom plays a relatively important role, because the industry is otherwise represented here only to a small extent.

Attractions

Since Taldom experienced no destruction of the Second World War, the old cityscape with wooden houses and old churches in the city center is relatively well preserved, while newer housing estates are concentrated mainly in the suburbs. Near Taldom is the former country estate Spas- Ugol, which is known as the birthplace of the writer Mikhail Saltykov -Shchedrin. Today, the museum is housed there.

Near Taldom is also home to one of the strongest radio stations in the world, namely a long-wave transmitter at the frequency of 261 kHz with a transmitter power of 2500 kilowatts, which radiated from masts with a height of 275 meters. Traffic
