History

The history of today Tallink goes back to the year 1965. This year, the ESCO launched the ship transfer of passengers between Helsinki and Tallinn with Vanemuine. A regular year-round traffic was established in 1968 with the ship Tallinn, setting the route was operated until its replacement by the Georg Ots in 1980.

In May 1989 ESCO founded with the Finnish Oy Palkkiyhtymä the Estonian subsidiary Laevandusühisettevõte Tallink. The following December, the new company bought the ship Scandinavian Sky by SeaEscape and took the traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn in January 1990 with the renamed into Tallink ship. In the same year, the freighter Transestonia was added on this route. ESCO served at the same time the route continue with their ship Georg Ots. The competition between the parent company and the subsidiary Tallink ESCO was released in September 1991, when the ESCO Georg Ots chartered to Tallink. In the early 1990s, the number of passengers took on the Helsinki-Tallinn route continuously, so that Tallink between December 1992 and December 1995, the chartered Saint Patrick II by Irish Ferries and thus the capacity on the route extended.

In 1993 Tallink became a purely Estonian company: Palkkiyhtymä sold the shares in the company Tallink Tallink to ESCO and the ship. At the same time, more companies established on the route Helsinki -Tallinn, as the Estonian New Line, based in Tallinn company Inreko. In January 1994, the company Tallink and Inreko Laeva AS merged to form AS dates. The name Tallink has been retained as a brand name for the fleet.

In the same year Inreko bought the north of Estonia Estline (a subsidiary of ESCO and the Swedish Nordström & Thulin AB), renamed it in Vana Tallinn and took it for Tallink on the Helsinki -Tallinn route in operation. At the same time bought Inreko two fast hydrofoils, Liisa and Laura, who they put into service under the brand name Tallink Express on the track. 1994 tried Tallink with the chartered ferries Balanga Queen and Ambassador II a road to Germany ( Helsinki-Tallinn route -Travemünde ) build.

In September 1994, the activities of AS Ermine were divided into two companies. One was responsible for the transport Germany, but was soon closed it. The other was the AS Hansatee, which took the Helsinki -Tallinn traffic and the Tallink brand. 45% of AS Hansatee were controlled by ESCO, Inreko owned 12.75% of the shares, other 42.25 % belonged to the Bank of Estonia Ühispank. The first large ferry was taken in 1995 on the track in operation: AS Hansatee chartered the Mare Baltic states of Estline and renamed it to Meloodia. Due to some disputes between Inreko and ESCO (mostly about the charter price of Vana Tallinn) sold Inreko his shares to ESCO in December 1996. Sold all Inreko the Tallink Express hydrofoils to Linda Lines ( Estonia) and operated the flight Helsinki - Tallinn Vana Tallinn under the brand name TH Ferries.

1997, the company chartered the second large ferry Normandy by Stena Line. To replace the lost hydrofoils bought AS Hansatee in May 1997 a new express catamaran, which they christened on Tallink Express.

Passenger numbers made it clear that two large ferries were needed for the traffic, and so Tallink purchased in December 1997 with the expiration of the charter contract for the Normandy, the Lion King of Stena Line, which was provided as Fantaasia for Tallink into service in February 1998. In July of the same year Tallink purchased the freighter Capella with which the line was opened from Paldiski after Kapellskar, the first Swedish route of the Estonian company. In October 1998, Tallink had to be sold because it no longer met the new safety regulations. Two months later, AS Hansatee bought the first fast ferry, which was able to transport even vehicles that Tallink AutoExpress.

In the meantime Estline has been completely taken over by ESCO and in December 2000, both ships of Estline, the Regina Baltica and the Baltic Kristina were chartered to AS Hansatee; the ships still served the route between Tallinn and Stockholm, but now under the brand Tallink. Already in August 2000 ordered AS Hansatee their first newbuilding at the Finnish company Aker Yards Finland. In June 2001 Tallink purchased the Tallink AutoExpress II, during 2001 Estline was declared bankrupt in July.

2002 changed its name to the AS Hansatee in AS Tallink Grupp. In May 2002, the company took over the new cruise ferry Romantika (capacity: 2500 passengers), which she put on the route Helsinki - Tallinn service. In November 2002, the Georg Ots was sold to the Russian government.

2004 more ships came to the Tallink fleet which will AutoExpress 3 and 4 ( Tallinn -Helsinki ) and the sister ship of the Romantika, Victoria I, which replaced the Fantaasia on the route Tallinn -Stockholm. This in turn took over the route Helsinki - Tallinn - St. Petersburg, but this was set in January 2005 due to unprofitability.

2005 Tallink ordered more ships at the Aker Yards Finn (Galaxy, fast ferries ) and a ferry at Fincantieri in Italy.

On 9 December 2005 Tallink was listed for the first time at the stock exchange in Tallinn. For some time the shares are also available on German stock exchanges (ISIN: A0HNKY ).

2006 Tallink purchased the Baltic business of Superfast Ferries and opened a route from Riga to Stockholm ( first Fantasia, then Regina Baltica ), the Galaxy was delivered and replaced the Romantika while they took over the route Tallinn -Stockholm.

Furthermore, Tallink Silja Line took over its competitors in the Sea Containers Ltd.. In October 2006, the company expressed interest in the state-subsidized routes between Gotland and the Swedish mainland for the period 2009 to 2015.

2007, the former Superfast ferries were placed under the brand Tallink and their route was extended (Tallinn -Helsinki -Rostock ). In addition, the MS Meloodia was chartered for ten months at Balearia (Spain).

In August 2011, Tallink put the line Tallinn Helsinki -Rostock again and chartered the former Superfast Ferries now to the Stena Line.
