Talvin Singh

Talvin Singh (born in 1970 in Leytonstone, London ) is a British musician, DJ and tabla virtuoso who is best known for his arrangements of classical Indian music with drum and bass and ambient. Talvin Singh's works are often associated with the Asian Underground.

Biography

Singh grew up in Leytonstone. At the age of five he began to play on the tabla. And although he was interested in as a teenager for more punk rock and break dancing, he went to India at 15 to Lakshman Singh perfecting his classic Indian tabla. Within a year, he returned to make a musician of classical Indian style career back to England. However, his style was already very influenced by Western styles of music.

So Singh began to develop in the late 80's his own style, he tried western and Indian music styles fuse together and worked together, among others, Bjork, Courtney Pine, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sun Ra, Cleveland Watkiss and the Indigo Girls.

1995 Singh founded the Anokha club night at London's local Blue Note. Every Monday there were - to drum -and- bass DJs and South Asian punk bands - along with Talvin Singh. Within a short time the Anokha club night has developed into a highlight of the London music scene. 1997 Singh then published the compilation album Anokha - Soundz of the Asian Underground.

A year later he released his first solo album - "OK ," for which he won the Mercury Music Prize in 1999. In 2001, then released his second solo album " Ha ".

His virtuoso tabla, his distinctive style and its growing notoriety led and lead to numerous collaborations with other musicians (such as with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Bill Laswell and Trilok Gurtu ).
