Talesch (Persian تالش; formerly Hashtpar ), with its almost 40,000 inhabitants ( 2004), one of the largest cities in the northern part of the Iranian province of Gilan.

The population is, with, among others by the strong immigration from the poor eastern mountainous regions of Azerbaijan, of several linguistic and ethnic groups. The original language, the so-called Taleshi dominated today only a minority. The language is mostly used today Azeri, a Turkish and widespread in northern Iran dialect of Azerbaijan.

Also, the rapid urban development Talesch owes in large part to the strong immigration. That the city is only 65 years old, belies its contemporary meaning and appearance. Much older, however, are archaeological finds, which suggest a up to 6,000 years of history. The archaeological sites are located in the Taleschi Mountains, which are also attributed to the Talesch region in which the city is located Talesch.
