Tam White

Tam White ( born July 12, 1942 in Edinburgh, Scotland, † 21 June 2010, ibid; actually: Thomas Bennett Sim ) was a Scottish blues and jazz singer. He has also been seen as an actor.

Life

Tam White grew up as the son of a truck driver and a cleaning lady. He lived above the pub White Hart Inn, Grassmarket. Influenced musically Even in his family, he began singing in the Secondary School in various performances and competed at the Edinburgh Opera Company.

White came into contact with popular music and began singing in a skiffle group. He earned his money, however, first as a stonemason. In the early 1960s he began to sing in some other groups. In 1964 he moved to the Boston Dexters to London, as they had received a recording contract with EMI. As two singles flopped, EMI dropped them again. With the group The Buzz he also had little success, and focused on a solo career. With Decca Records, he recorded several singles and one album. In the 1970s he was a presenter on a Scottish variety show for Scottish Television (STV). He was also the first artist who ever appeared on Top of the Pops. His song What In the World 's Come Over You had surprisingly placed in the UK Top 40. After a rather unsuccessful career, he still went back to the stonemason craft.

In 1980, he returned as a blues and jazz singer. He has played with Boz Burrell (ex - Bad Company ) and Fraser Speirs, and had regular appearances at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. In 1987 he took over the vocals of Robbie Coltrane in the six -part television series Tutti Frutti. He then played several small roles in various television series. He has a major gig as a Scottish clan leader in Mel Gibson's Braveheart. Then he refocused on his singing career, but continued to play supporting roles. He took on albums with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Brian Kellock and his own bands.

In August 2010, he was to appear at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, but died on June 21, 2010 of a heart attack.
