Tamanend

Tamanend, Tammany or Tammamend, (* 1628, † 1698 ) was the chief of a clan, of Lenni - Lenape Indians in the Delaware Valley. Their territories reached in the north to Hudson Bay and south to Manhattan. The main village was located near present-day German Town, from where Tamanend reigned. Tamanend is also known as a peacemaker between the natives and English settlers in the area around Pennsylvania, which were led by William Penn.

Sculpture

On behalf of the city of Philadelphia was erected a sculpture of Tamaned by sculptor Raymond Sandoval from Jemez Springs in 1995. The sculpture is one of the first sculptures of an Indian in the United States in public places. It stands on the corner of Market and Front Streets in Philadelphia against the Penn 's Landing.

Tamanend companies

In 1772 the first Tammanend ( Tammany ) Society was founded in Philadelphia. Originally called the company "the sons of King Tammany ". Soon new companies Tammanend Georgia and Rhode Iceland formed. The most famous and influential Vereiningung originated in New York and introduced many years influential politicians of the city. From this period comes the Tammany Hall in New York.
