Tamaqua is a borough of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania in the United States.

Geography

Tamaqua is located 15 kilometers east of Frackville and 10 kilometers south of Hazleton. Allentown in the southeast is about 40 kilometers away. Interstate 81 runs at a distance of approximately 10 kilometers to the west, U.S. Highway 209 through the town center.

Founder of the town in 1799 was the Burkhard Moser, who called native of Germany the settlement " Tuscarora ". When it turned out that there was already a town with the same name in the vicinity which are only to demTuscarora chief Tankamochk or was " Tam -a- kwah " named. In 1832, the Registry for the Borough was. After around substantial deposits were found on anthracite coal, the place grew by immigrants from Europe quickly. The miners Molly Maguires covenant had its center in Tamaqua. In 1874 a railway station was built, from which the coal by rail could be transported economically. As in the 1960s, but increasingly also other forms of energy were applied and the coal production thus fell sharply, the number of inhabitants declined. The railway line was last operated by the Reading Company. Caused due to lack of utilization and by Hurricane Diane (1955 ) significant damage to the station was closed and added to the National Register of Historic Places. There are also the Tamaqua Historic District, the Anthracite Bank Building and the George Ormrod House are registered.

In 2011 a population of 7105 persons was determined, which means a weakening by 1.0 % over the year 2000. The average age of the residents was in 2011 with 40.3 years, slightly below the average of Pennsylvania, which was 43.3 years.
