Tambo (Queensland)

Tambo is a small town in the Blackall - Tambo region in the Australian state of Queensland.

Geography

Tambo is located about 100 km south-east of Blackall and about 850 kilometers northeast of Brisbane. It lies on the Barcoo River and has connection to the Landsborough Highway.

History

In the area around Tambo lived various Aboriginal tribes before the arrival of Europeans. So the name is due to a word of Aboriginal language, which translated means hidden place.

In 1846, the region was explored by today's Tambo by Thomas Livingstone Mitchell. 1863 Tambo was established as the first city in Western Queensland.

In 1927, crashed near Tambo for the first time an aircraft of the company Qantas Airways with fatal consequences from. In the fall, all three occupants were killed.

Economy

Cattle ranching and tourism are the main sources of income today. The city is known mainly for the production of Tambo Teddies.
