Tampico

Federal State

Tampico is a port city in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas with 294 789 inhabitants ( as of 2000), on the Gulf of Mexico. It is surrounded by marsh and lagoons. The word comes from the Tampico huasteco language. Tam means "place " and pico means " water dog " or " Otter" ( and they lived there in pre-Columbian time).

History

1532 offered Fray Andres de Olmos, a Franciscan monk, the huasteco Indians his protection. On April 26, 1554 was built with permission of the Royal Governor Luis Velasco of the monk monastery. In honor of the governor, it was called San Luis de Tampico.

After it was destroyed by pirates in 1683, it was first settled in 1823 on the orders of General Antonio López de Santa Anna again. 1829 defeated Santa Anna here a Spanish unit. Tampico was during the Mexican-American War ( 1846-48 ) and in 1862 occupied by the French.

1870 consecrated General Porfirio Díaz, a first pier, the Customs House was built in 1896.

Until 1901 it was a secondary port, after the development of oil fields in the area, it was the beginning of the 20th century 's most important oil port in the world. Even today, Tampico is the most modern port in Mexico.

The arrest of American sailors on April 9, 1914 resulted in the Tampico incident and resulted in the occupation of Vera Cruz and finally to the abdication of Mexican President Victoriano Huerta.

The city of Ciudad Madero was incorporated in 1970.
