History

Tamworth existed since the time of the Anglo-Saxons and was sacked by the Danes in the 9th century. To ward off further attacks, let Ethelfleda queen of the kingdom of Mercia in the year 915 build defenses along with the castle. Instead of the Anglo-Saxon castle built by the Normans in the 11th century a new one which exists to this day. In 1588 Tamworth was granted the status of a Borough to perform with the right to three years markets. This was confirmed in 1663 by King Charles II.

During the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th century, the small market town grew rapidly, this is mainly because of the numerous coal mines in the area. Tamworth developed into a major transportation hub in the city, the Coventry Canal and the Birmingham and Fazeley canal - crossed. Later the railroad was added, with the track Derby - Birmingham Midland Railway and the London and North Western Railway.

Prime Minister Robert Peel took from 1830 until his death in 1850, the constituency of Tamworth in the House. In 1834 he had published his manifesto of Tamworth here, with which he laid the foundations for the modern Conservative Party. Historically, Tamworth was divided between the counties of Staffordshire and Warwickshire; the border ran right through the city center. 1888 came the whole city to Staffordshire. Since the 1940s, the population has tripled.
