Tan Cheng Lock

Tun Dato Sir Tan Cheng Lock ( born April 5, 1883 in Malacca, † December 8, 1960 ibid ) was the founder and from 1949 to 1958 the first President of the Malaysian Chinese Association, which lobbied for the interests of the ethnic Chinese in Malaysia, and businessman.

Life

He was born into a wealthy family in Malacca. He invested mainly in rubber degradation and banking and benefited early on from the economic growth of Malaya.

Prior to independence, Malaya was a member of the Straits Settlement Legislative Council.

Tan Siew Sin His son, former Finance Minister of Malaysia, was from 1961 to 1974 chairman of the MCA.
