Tanaina is a census -designated place (CDP ) in Matanuska- Susitna Borough in Alaska in the United States.

Geography

Tanaina CDP is located north of Wasilla between Meadow Lakes and in Matanuska- Susitna Fishhook Valley. The area includes residential areas west of Wasilla - Fishhook Road. The nahegeliegende Tanaina peak was named in 1966 after the local Aborigines Dena'ina Athabascan -.

History

Around 1906 the Carle Wagon Road was built, which served as a thoroughfare to the gold mines of the Willow Creek Mining District. The Carle Wagon Road was later renamed in Wasilla - Fishhook Road. After 1945, the area was settled. The George Parks Highway was completed in 1971. Low housing costs, the rural lifestyle and the proximity to the city Anchorage led to a rapid population growth.

At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000) had Tanaina CDP 4,993 inhabitants on a land area of 70.2 km ². The average age was 31.5 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income engl. ) amounted to U.S. $ 23 967 ( U.S. National Average: U.S. $ 21,587 ). 7.5 % of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4% ) .23,1 % of the inhabitants are of German descent.

Economy

The economy is primarily based on retail. Many residents work in Anchorage, Palmer and Wasilla, or are employed in the public service at the municipal office of the CDP, the boroughs and the federal government.
