Tandberg is a Norwegian manufacturer of videoconferencing systems, headquartered in Lysaker west of Oslo. The company was listed until its acquisition by Cisco Systems on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

Main competitors are Polycom, LifeSize, Radvision, VCON and Sony, as well as the smaller competitor VTEL.

History

The company was founded in 1933 under the name Tandberg Radiofabrikk by the electronics engineer Vebjørn Tandberg and produced initially speakers, receivers, and high-quality tape recorders.

In 1979, the company split into the company Tandberg, Tandberg Data and Tandberg Television.

Tandberg 1999 acquired the Norwegian company Internet Technology AS, then in July 2005, the Dutch company IVIGO of TNO Telecom, in October, the New Zealand company Ectus, Ltd.. In September 2007, the English company Codian Ltd. followed.

In October 2009, Cisco Systems announced, to take over Tandberg for about 3 billion U.S. dollars as TelePresence Technology Group. After completion of the acquisition Tandberg since April 19, 2010 Part of Cisco Systems.

Patent controversy

In November 2010 Jason Garret - Glaser, a x264 developer, the accusation, Tandberg Telecom had described in a patent application from the December 2008 step by step an algorithm, which he had developed in October 2008 for x264.
