Tane Province

Tane (Japanese多 祢 国, Tane no kuni ) was an old province of Japan. It consisted of the islands of Tanegashima (Island of Tane ) and Yakushima ( Yaku Island ), south of Kyūshū.

Tane was in the 7th century as an island Tane (多 祢 岛, Tane no shima ) refers. The living on it Hayato paid tribute Japan, but were politically autonomous.

In the chronicle Shoku Nihongi found for the year 702, the following entry:

「八月丙申、朔。薩摩・多褹。隔化逆命。於是発兵征討。遂校戸置吏焉。」

"8 Month, 1st day: Tane Satsuma and broke off relations and did not obey the king's [ Mommu ] command. So sent [ the government ] an army, conquered them, counted the population and put an officer. "

This marks the founding of the provinces of Satsuma and Tane.

Tane has 824 affiliated to the Province Ōsumi.
