Tanganyika District

Tanganyika ( original name: Tanganyika ) is a district in the Democratic Republic of Congo has around 2.5 million inhabitants (as of 2006). It is part of the province of Katanga. Main place of Tanganyika is Kalemie.

Geography

Tanganyika is located in the southern east of the country. Adjacent areas are:

  • Of Lake Tanganyika in the east, which is located at the main town Kalemie
  • State of Zambia in the southeast
  • Which also belongs to Katanga district Haut- Katanga in the south
  • Which also belongs to Katanga district in the southwest Skin Lomami
  • The province of Kasai Oriental in the north- west
  • The Maniema province in the north

History

According to the administrative reclassification of the country, which was provided for in the Constitution of 2005, the province of Katanga should be split and Tanganyika and three other districts of Katanga province get the status. As one of the 26 provinces, the area should get an independent management and private regional parliament. In January 2011 this reform, however, was virtually canceled by a controversial constitutional amendment by President Joseph Kabila. This leaves Tanganyika until further continue a subordinate district of Katanga.
