Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana

The Tangipahoa Parish (French: Paroisse de Tangipahoa ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 121 097 inhabitants and a population density of 59.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Amite City.

Geography

The Parish is located almost in the extreme east of Louisiana, bordered to the north Mississippi and has an area of 2132 square kilometers, of which 85 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following Parishes and Counties:

History

The Tangipahoa Parish was formed in 1868 from parts of Livingston Parish, the St. Helena Parish, Parish of St. Tammany and Washington Parish.

According to the census in 2000 in Tangipahoa Parish lived 100 588 people in 36,558 households and 25,773 families. The population density was 49 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 69.76 percent White, 28.35 percent Black or African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.46 percent from other races groups; 0.78 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.53 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.

Of the 36,558 households out of which 35.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.9 percent were married couples living together, 16.2 percent were single mothers, 29.5 percent were non-families, 24.0 percent of all households and 8.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.19 persons.

In relation to the parish the population was spread out 27.7 percent of residents under the age of 18, 12.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.6 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 29,412, and the median income for a family was $ 36,731. Males have a median income of $ 31,576, women $ 20,066. The per capita income was $ 14,461. 18.0 percent of families 22.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Among them, 28.6 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 20.1 percent of people over 65 years.
