Tania Maria

Tânia Maria Correa Reis ( born May 9, 1948 in São Luís, Brazil ), known as Tânia Maria, is a jazz singer, pianist and songwriter.

Life and work

Tânia Maria learned to play the piano at age seven and won thirteen years old with a school band their first prize. She studied law and Romance languages ​​, and finally the piano in Brasília. In 1971 she released her first album. Mid -1970s, she lived a long time in France and performed in several countries. On the recommendation of Charlie Byrd, who was enthusiastic about her piano playing, she got a record deal by Concord Records. In 1981 she settled down in New York. A commercial breakthrough it achieved in 1984 with her ​​album Come with Me, for which she received a Grammy Nominations. She has published more than 25 albums and was a regular guest at international jazz festivals, she entered several times at the Monterey Jazz Festival and at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

In her works she combines Brazilian music with jazz and pop, " said her warm, soulful alto voice and her percussive piano playing complement accentuated ." She has performed with other musicians as Michel Petrucciani and groups such as Mondo Grosso.
