Tanneron

Tanneron is a commune with 1464 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

The place is located in the eponymous, overall very sparsely populated Tanneron massif, which is characterized geologically by its slate soils. In the sequence of altitudes 1970 wild mimosa, Erika, chestnuts, pines and maquis huddle despite the severe forest fire of the year together.

History

The 3 km northeast of the community located oppidum of Peygros occupies the pre-Roman settlement of the area.

In 1200 the town was first mentioned as Castrum Tannaroni. The name possibly comes from the root word tan, which means the bark of chestnut and oak, or goes back to a pre-European root, after the tan is for mountain. The village belonged to the dominion of Grasse and was built in 1825 by secession from Callian an independent village.

The construction of the dam of Lac de Saint -Cassien the tourism received a growing importance.
