The Tanzanian Shilling ( Shilingi ) is the currency of Tanzania. It replaced the East African shilling, which was valid before independence in 1964 and until 1966.
One Shilling is divided into 100 senti ( cents). Shown is an amount in the form Schilling / Senti. If a zero amount a dash or an equals sign is placed in this location. (Example: "= / 50" correspond to 50 Senti, " 100 / =" is equivalent to 100 shillings ). Due to the inflation Sentimünzen from the 1990s have faded from the payments.
In many areas of the country, especially in the touristy, the U.S. dollar is now used as a parallel currency.
1966 coins were issued with a value of 5, 20 and 50 senti and 1 shilling. The 5- Senti coin is made of bronze, the 20 - Senti coin made of brass and the 50 senti and 1 shilling coin are made of copper nickel. 5 shilling coins in copper nickel were introduced in 1972, they were followed by 10 - Senti coins made from brass in 1977. This first series of coins was in circulation until 1984 and was designed by Christopher Ironside.
1987 replaced nickel-plated steel coins worth 50 senti and 1 shilling, the predecessor and cupro-nickel coins in denominations of 5 ( octagonal shape ) and 10 shillings were introduced. 1990 nickel-plated steel coins in denominations of 5, 10 and 20 shillings were introduced. 1994 brass coins were introduced in the value of 100 shillings in 1996 worth 50 shillings in 1998 worth 200 shillings.
Currently, only the coins are coins in denominations of 50, 100 and 200 shillings in use. Smaller denominations exist only sporadically.
Bills
In 1966, the Bank of Tanzania notes for 5, 10, 20 and 100 shillings a. The five -shilling notes were replaced by coins in 1972 and introduced in 1985 notes with a value of 50 shillings.
