Taourirt, Morocco

Taouirt or Tawrirt (Arabic: تاوريرت ) is a Moroccan city in the Oriental region. It is the capital of the homonymous province.

Location

Taouirt is located at Oued Za in the north- east of Morocco at the track Fès- Taza- Guercif - Oujda in a hilly to mountainous area about 400 m above sea level. inst.

Population

About 90 % of the population are Berber descent; they have migrated to the cities ( rural exodus ) to find work and earn a livelihood for their families since the 1970s because of climatic ( droughts ) or sociocultural ( of opportunity ) reasons from their ancestral homelands. Until the 1950s, the small market town only had about 3,000 inhabitants. The Arab- origin population part makes only a few percent of the total population, but occupies the leading positions in industry and government as well as in health and education. Economy

Was the region for centuries mainly nomadic or semi-nomadic area, the settled life has prevailed largely in the 20th century. In the area there were some - now abandoned - ore mines in which iron, zinc, fluorine, and lead was mined. Through irrigation projects along the rivers Moulouya and Za, the area of ​​arable land has more than doubled in the last decades of the 20th century. Also by the re-creation of the province Taouirt (1999) the importance of the city has grown. The national or international tourism plays no role in the economy.

History

As in most areas of Morocco Berber missing records on the history of the region and city. We know, however, that once a not insignificant city called Za must have been in the vicinity, which was renamed after its conquest by the Marinids in the 13th century in Taouirt. The Alaouite built on a hill above the settlement of a fort ( kasbah ), but which has been transformed by the resident Berber tribes of Kerarma and Ahlaf in a storage building in the 19th century. During the French colonial period, other tribes settled - initially in tents - in the environment.

Attractions

Apart from the surrounding countryside, the city has no historical or cultural attractions. The lying on a hill old fortress ( kasbah ) has been transformed into a non-accessible transmitter.
