Taourirt Province

The about 8,500 km ² and 220,000 inhabitants, Province Taouirt (Arabic إقليم تاوريرت ) is a Moroccan province in the Oriental region ( region). The provincial capital is the city Taouirt.

Geography

Location

The Taouirt province is bordered on the northwest by the province of Nador in the north of the province of Berkane, in the northeast of the prefecture of Oujda - Angad, on the east by the province Jerada, in the southeast of the province Figuig, on the southwest by the province Boulemane and in the West to the provincial Guercif.

Landscape

The semi-desert in large parts of the province is on average about 500 m high ( Taouirt 400 m above sea level. ); the highest peaks are at 1400 to 1600 m. The Oued Moulouya flows through the province from southwest to northeast. Another - dried out over large parts of the year - is the flux Oued Za, whose waters are combined with those of the Moulouya stored north of Taouirt in a large reservoir.

Climate

The desert-like climate is hot and dry. In summer, the maximum daily temperatures can reach 40 to 45 ° C; the nights are much cooler depending on the sky with morning temperatures as low as 10 to 15 ° C. In winter it is slightly cooler with daytime temperatures of 20 to 30 ° C and night temperatures of 5 to 10 ° C.

Population

The population of the sparsely populated province is approximately 100% of Berbers who lived here until the early 20th century as a semi-nomadic ( transhumant ). Meanwhile, more than half of the people in the three cities Taouirt (approx. 80,000 ), El Aioun Sidi Mellouk (approx. 35,000 ) and Debdou (about 5,000 ). The remaining eleven living in smaller rural communities, whose main places but already have small-town character.

Economy

The agricultural area of the province is - depending on the winter rains - about 120,000 ha by the creation of the Moulouya Lake in the years 1990 to 2000 north of Taouirt is enough water for people and irrigation of some crops (approx. 8000 ha) available.
