Tapa, Estonia

Tapa ( German taps) is a town in northern Estonia 80 km southeast of Tallinn, the administrative center of the municipality Tapa, in which it lies.

History

Tapa is Estonia's most important railway junction. Tallinn is 133 km away by railway 77 km, 112 km and Tartu Narva.

The emergence of tapas is on the railway Tallinn - attributed Saint Petersburg, which opened on October 24, 1870 with a big party of the Baltic Railway. The construction of the line Tapa ( taps) - Dorpat began in 1875, and on August 21, 1876, the first train of Reval (now Tallinn) from about Taps by Dorpat (now Tartu). Today the routes of Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways ) operate.

Tapa quickly grew as a settlement of the railway workers. Because the station was built on the land of the landowner taps, it got its name.

The end of 2005 the church was formed by the merger of the Tapa Tapa city with communities Lehtse and Saksi.

Population Development

In the first census 1922 2.398 inhabitants were counted. At the last census in 1986 there were 10,395. After the Soviet military withdrew in 1993, the population went back.
