Tapilula is a municipality in the central north of the Mexican state of Chiapas. The name, derived from the Nahuatl, means " place where the death penalty is common " or "Place of the hanged man ." Administrative seat and largest town is the same Tapilula.

The municipality has about 12,000 inhabitants and is 42.7 km ². Tapilula borders the Municipalities Ixhuatán, Pueblo Nuevo Solistahuacán, Rayón and Pantepec.
