Tapio Rautavaara

Tapio Rautavaara ( born March 8, 1915 in Pirkkala, † September 25, 1979 in Helsinki) was a Finnish athlete, musician and actor. His special discipline was the javelin.

Rautavaara won the bronze medal at the European Championships 1946 in Oslo. Two years later, at the 1948 Olympic Games in London, he was in the same discipline Olympic champion; In addition, he decided several international competitions for themselves. In the 1950s, he turned to the archery and 1958 world champion with the Finnish team.

But he was successful not only as athletes but also as an actor and musician. His quiet, sentimental pop songs are popular in Finland today. His adaptation of Johnny Cash Hits I Walk the Line (Finnish: Yölinjalla ) is one of the most played songs in the late evening. Rautavaara has starred in numerous films and Finnish was allegedly considered for the role of Tarzan after Johnny Weissmuller had ended his career.

His monument stands in Oulunkylä, the one district of Helsinki, where Rautavaara had spent most of his life.
