At least since the Iron Age Taplow has been permanently settled. On the grounds of Taplow Court in 1999 of a 3000 year old fortified settlement with space for about 200 people have been found during excavations remains. Traces testify that this Hill Fort must have been attacked and burned down.

It is assumed that the defenses have survived the Roman occupation, as shards of Roman pottery were found.

Also next to Taplow Court is the grave mound an Anglo-Saxon chieftain from about the year 620 AD. The grave was opened in 1883. The grave goods are now in the British Museum in London. In Taplow Court an exhibition of replicas can be seen.

According to the traditions Birinus, Bishop of Dorchester baptized around 635 in a pond residents who wanted to convert to Christianity. Very close to the pagan grave mound in the 8th century was the first small church. It was replaced by a larger medieval church in the 13th century.

In the Domesday Book, the English Doomsday Book of 1086, Taplow is performed as Thapeslau.
