Țara Moților

The Pimp country (Romanian Tara Moţilor ) is a cultural and ethno- geographical region of western Transylvania in Romania.

Location

The Pimp Land is located in the Apuseni Mountains at the headwaters of the river Aries. It has a share in the mountains of Bihor, Vladeasa, Gilău, Muntele Mare, Trascău and Metaliferi. The exact incidence is controversial. Cultural Center is the city Câmpeni ( Topesdorf ).

Name

The region is named after its inhabitants, the Pimp (Romanian Moţi ). The ethnological classification of these moaning is not safe. In Romania, they are usually considered to be direct descendants of the original inhabitants Dacian. According to other views, the moaning immigrated in later centuries in the mountainous country and do not differ ethnological of the other Romanians.

As one of the first authors used Michael Lebrecht 1792 in his work "On the national character of the located in Transylvania nations," the term " Pimp ". After a thesis is " Moţi " is derived from the Romanian word " mot " ( German " tufts of hair " or " hands" ), formerly the traditional hairstyle of men in the region.

History

The Pimp lived at the time of the Habsburg Monarchy in the interior of the Apuseni Mountains partly as free subjects of the emperor; in the peripheral areas of the mountain they were predominantly impaired Hungarian landlords. They saw themselves as "men of the Emperor " and took in the event of a conflict between the Austrian empire and the Hungarian monarchy regularly for the former party.

The identity of the two moaning historical events play an important role: In 1784 Pimp and other Romanian peasants rose under Horea against the Hungarian landlords before the rebellion was put down with some delay by Austrian troops. During the revolutionary years 1848/49, when Hungary tried to break away from Austria, fought numerous moaning under their leader Avram Iancu with a partisan tactic successfully the Hungarian revolutionary army and were direct allies of the Austrian emperor. In these battles, atrocities were committed on both sides numerous.

Population and Economy

The Pimp country is characterized by very compact villages in the valleys and numerous scattered settlements in the mountains. This pull up in an altitude of 1400 meters, making them the highest permanently inhabited property in Romania. Because of the difficult infrastructural conditions, the region is affected by a sharp decline in population since the 1960s, affecting particularly in the higher mountain hamlets.

The residents are mainly concerned with forestry and grazing. Wood crafts and mining are of declining importance. An increasing role of tourism.
