Tara (mountain)

The Tara National Park is a national park was established in 1981 in the mountainous region in western Serbia. The Tara Mountains close to the north-west of the Zlatibor and extends to the Drina river, which forms the border with Bosnia - Herzegovina here.

The National Park covers a total area of ​​37 584 ha, of which the core area is about 22,000 ha Elevations range from 250 m above sea level to 1500 m above. The managing authority of the park has its headquarters in the nearby town of Bajina Basta.

Three quarters of the area of the national park is covered by dense forests. A special feature is the botanical Pančić spruce, whose only habitat is found in Tara. Due to the sometimes rare species of plants and animal diversity is the National Park of scientific interest and was made for this reason too under strict legal protection.

The scenic attractiveness makes the National Park also an important tourist destination in the region. Several sites offer health spas, a commonly taken by tourists in claim attractions are boat tours through the deep canyons. Not far from the National Park, the museum and tourist train Šarganska osmica was commissioned in 2003.
