Taradeau

Taradeau ( provenzalischeTaradèu ) is a commune with 1767 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Taradeau is a known for its vineyards village in the central -Var. The municipality is situated on the D10, which connects Les Arcs with Lorgues. It is nestled in the narrow valley exit the Florièye, a tributary of the Argens. Taradeau goes back to a Gallo- Roman settlement which was connected to the Via Aurelia.

History

In the district of Taradeau existed in the first century BC, a Celtic- Ligurian housing development. Remains of a fortified oppidum in 1969 found on the ledge that overlooks the village.

As Taradel it is first mentioned in documents in 1131. The Castrum de Taradello is mentioned in documents in 1200. A slightly later document indicates that the rights of the Counts of Provence, in the year 1252.

At the beginning of the 15th century the island was uninhabited. The domination of the emerging settlement divided in the 17th century, five families, including the families and Puget Commandaire. The castle was besieged by Raymond de Turenne and later of Charles V.

Demographics

In the late 20th century has experienced strong population growth Taradeau like many communities in the region. From 1962 until the turn of the century, the population increased from less than 400 to over 1600 people. The growth owes the place alone a strong influx, as the birth rate has been negative almost throughout the period.

Culture and sights

Add to Le Castrum mentioned remains of the former fortified village on a hill in the east of the village, are among other things a monument historique as protected 24 m high watchtower from the 13th century and the chapel of Saint- Martin, between the 11th and 12th centuries arose. It is protected as Inscrit Monument Historique and was renovated in 1993.
