Tarapoto

Tarapoto is a city of the South American country Peru at the foot of the Andes. It is the economic center of the San Martín Province, even if moyobamba is the capital of the province.

With 108 042 inhabitants ( 2005), Tarapoto is the largest city in the Peruvian region of San Martín. Tarapoto is an important traffic junction, since the city is situated on the road that leads into the Amazon Basin from the Pacific coast about Moyobamba to Yurimaguas. An airport with connections to Lima and Iquitos exists.

Tarapoto is located 350 meters above sea level and has a tropical climate. The rainy season is from December to March. During this time, the streets around Tarapoto are often barely passable.
