History

At the time of European settlement, the area was almost completely forested, which earned him the name " Forty Mile Bush." The forest has largely been cleared to get pasture, although the area is also populated today still very thin. The term " bus " is now used only by the local rugby team ( Wairarapa - Bush).

Most residents of the Tararua District also feel more than ten years after the administrative reform in 1989 does not belong to Manawatu -Wanganui. They identify themselves as either residents of the Hawke's Bay ( northern district ) or as inhabitants of the former Wairarapa district, who now splits into Masterton, Carterton and South Wairarapa District.

Also in the New Zealand media, the district of the eastern Wellington region is assigned, for example, in weather forecasting.

Economy

The Tararua district is shaped to a large extent on agriculture ( grazing ), but also the textile and food industries, play a role. Another emerging industry is forestry.
