Tararua Range

The Tararua Range or Tararua Ranges is a mountain range in the southern part of the North Island of New Zealand, which runs parallel to the shoreline for a distance of about 110 kilometers between Palmerston North and Upper Hutt. The widest range of mountain ridge has about 40 kilometers.

At its southern tip of the ridge merges into the Rimutaka Range, which in turn forms the eastern flank of Wellington Harbour. South of Palmerston North is the Ruahine Range the continuation of the Tararua Range, while the Manawatu River forms a natural border between the two mountain ranges.

The only road that leads over the mountain passes, from Palmerston North to Pahiatua. The road through the Manawatu Gorge, the section of State Highway 3 between Palmerston North and Woodville is very disability- prone, especially in winter, and the railway line from Napier to Wellington is doing the. In the south of the State Highway 2 winds between Upper hat and Featherston over the mountains.

The Otaki River rises in the Tararua Range and passes the Mount Crawford on his way to the southwest.

The highest peaks of the mountains are

Many tourist areas are very interesting especially developed from the Kapiti Coast, for the near Wellington is the mountain range to the Tararua Forest Park is a popular destination for hikers and climbers.
