Tari, Papua New Guinea

Tari is a small town in the highlands of Papua New Guinea with about 8,000 inhabitants ( 2000 census ). It is the capital of the province of Hela.

Geography

Tari is located at 1500 meters above sea level and has a pleasant, mild climate year round Spring. The nearest towns Porgera are 40 km in the north, Mount Hagen 100 km to the east and Mendi 50 km to the southeast.

Population

The people of the Huli is a resident of this area for over 1000 years. In 1936 there were the first contacts with Europeans and 1951 with official authorities. The people speak Huli and Tok Pisin. More than 60% are illiterate, alcoholism is widespread, despite the prescribed Prohibition.

Economy

The locals traditionally lived by shifting cultivation and hunting. As part of Papua Newguinea LNG Project gas fields since 2010 in the area opened up - the gas field " Hides " is about a half hour drive away. The economic recovery is not yet accompanied by an improvement of the infrastructure, so there is in the city in 2013 no bank.

Traffic

A runway allows air traffic. A road leads north and southeast to the neighboring town of Mendi.
