Tarn (lake)#Etymology

Tarn is the English word for corrie lake. Besides, it is also part of the name of mountain lakes in the northern English Lake District National Park.

In common parlance, the northern English Tarn area is also used for small lakes, regardless of the mode of origin or the situation.

In the Scandinavian languages ​​referred tjern, Tjärn, Tarn or tjorn a small natural lake, which is often in a forest whose vegetation extends to the shore or into the water.

The word is derived from Old Norse Tarn Tjörn, the pond is, and is found in many names for small lakes in Cumbria and the Pennines as a result of naming by the settled there after withdrawal of the Roman occupation Anglo-Saxons.
